Kris Kristofferson
APRIL 6th, 2025 @ 7:00pm
FITZROY CHURCH, 77 University St, BELFAST
Live performances from
The Fitzroy Music Collective
and commentary from Steve Stockman
and special guest John Dickinson (former minister Carmoney Presbyterian Church)
The world sadly lost the great songwriter Kris Kristofferson back in September (2024). Kristofferson was a wonderful songwriter, one of the best of his generation, in a particularly gifted generation.
Kristofferson's songs spoke into all our human complexities. On his death my friend Ryan Kee (who will sing at this event) sent me this message:
"All the themes of freedom, individuality, counter-culture, human imperfection and the struggle for redemption, the love, loss and complexity of human relationships, issues of social justice and advocacy for the marginalised, the spirit of hope, resilience and perseverance, it’s all there."
There is also a lot of Jesus in his songs. Crucifixion, pilgrimage, faith and redemption are scattered throughout his records across his career. Why Me? is a Christian classic of its time and though on none of his studio albums he also a huge UK Number 1 for Lena Martell in 1975, One Day At A Time.
Tonight you'll hear the familiar and the odd deep cut. You'll hear songs of alienation, searching and salvation.
